Lasting Impressions Lasting Impressions 20 Not black. It wasnt black. He'd thought so at first too, but black felt rough and this was smooth and cool. This was diving deep into the ocean, beyond the reach of the sun, and knowing that just out of sight a volcano boiled. This was fiery, blazing red tempered by a dark, calming blue. Duo had thought it would be the blue but hed never imagined the red it fused with so seamlessly. What was this color? Not space. Space wished it could be so rich, so subtle. He wanted to taste it, to touch it. Didnt it say in a book somewhere that this was the color of kings? For a moment it consumed him. He was plummeting into it, as if free falling through this not-space. He was afraid. No, he wasnt. He was lost, but there was trust. All he needed was direction. A sound. With only the thought, it came. Not a roar, not a crisp, high sound, but a low hum. He fell toward it, breathed it in, and found it exquisite, perfect in an imperfect way that he hadnt expected. The heat and the cold invaded him. His breath came hard. What was this madness, and where could he get more? Duos vision cleared. He was staring into Heeros eyes. Heero was staring back. Neither appeared to have any idea what they should do. The whole thing seemed surreal, like they were only watching it happen to two strangers. Duos mouth worked, but no sound came. Hed only slipped for a second. How had that been enough? What could he say? Anything he could think of would be obvious and inadequate. He pushed his loose hair back with hands that shook, but not from illness. That had passed completely. Even his tiredness had been whisked away by the adrenaline pumping through his veins. Duo? Heero whispered, and it was a release. Duo removed his hands from his own hair and put them in Heeros, pulling their mouths together in an abrupt kiss. It was not a sweet, innocent first kiss. It was a hungry, demanding clash of lips, teeth and tongues. It was perfect, Heero realized with a jolt. It was exactly how he wanted to be kissed. It was exactly how he wanted Duo, only Duo, to kiss him. Reality crashed down around him and he pushed Duo away, backing up as far as the small bathroom would allow. There were three things he suddenly knew with absolute certainty. First, he knew that he was in love with Duo. When had that happened? Not a moment ago. No, it had been long before that. Secondly, he knew that Duo loved him too. He wasnt the one to say when that had happened. And third, he knew that nothing had changed. He was looking into the face of his once-in-a-lifetime love and it didnt matter. He had to let him go. Was this even real? Was it a dream? It seemed like one, but on the other side of the wall he could hear Hilde crying, calling Wufei an insensitive bastard. His stomach churned. That would not happen in a dream. Heero, I- A firm hand clamped down over Duos mouth. Heero shook his head jerkily, almost convulsively as though not speaking of what had just occurred would somehow cause the event and all of the feelings behind it to fade into nothingness. The plea for understanding, though silent, was immediately heard. A rush of words and images accompanied it, while explanations that Heero could never articulate filled Duos head. Comprehension dawned. He felt his eyes filling with tears but he didnt let them fall. What would crying accomplish? What could be done at all? He reached up and gently removed Heeros hand from his mouth. Heero, I am not feeling quite so sick- well, I dont think Im going to throw up. Im going to go grab some clean clothes and take a shower. Then Ill think Ill get some sleep. And that was that. Nobody said it. Nobody had to. Heartsick, Heero nodded and left the bathroom. He told himself to get used to the knot in his stomach, the lump in his throat and the ache in his heart. He had a feeling they would be with him for a long time. It only vaguely registered that Wufei and Hilde were still shouting at each other. In the back of his mind, Heero knew that he should go see what was going on. His feet though, carried him in the opposite direction. He just couldnt take it right then. ~ * ~ Chapter 21 |
